The Architectural Design & Research Institute of Zhejiang University Co., Ltd. (UAD) was established in 1953. It is one of the earliest First-class Design Institutes among major national universities. UAD is guided by the principle of “Harmonious Environment, Global Vision, Design Integrating Teaching, Research, and Creation, Aiming High, Professional, and Powerful”, implementing the development strategy of “High-grade Culture, Long-term and Broad Vision, High-efficiency Management, High-caliber Personnel, Highly Professional Techniques, and High-quality Works”. The company passed ISO9001 certification in January 2000, and the Certifications of Occupational Health and Safety System and Environmental Management System in November 2017. The company now has more than 50 production and management departments.

Mr. He Jingtang, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Mr. Wu Yue, a Qiushi Professor of Zhejiang University, are our Art Director. The Company has a staff of nearly 1700, among which one receiver of Master of Engineering Design and Geotechnical Investigation of China, one expert entitled to Special Governmental Allowances of the State Council, two receivers of Top-100 Architects of China, five receivers of Master Engineering Surveyors and Designers of Zhejiang Province, four receivers of Outstanding Engineers of China, 12 awardees of the Young Architect Prize of the Architectural Society of China; more than 350 receivers of senior professional titles; and more than 540 registered engineers.

UAD is a leading large engineering design and consulting firm, focusing on architectural design and closely integrating quality design services and cutting-edge ideas in the industry. It provides a wide range of design, technical, and research services, covering architectural design at home and abroad, national space planning, municipal engineering design, EPC, whole-process consulting, project management, cultural heritage protection, interior design, landscape design, building curtain wall design, floodlighting design, display design, intelligent design, geotechnical engineering, geological exploration, green building, industrial design, BIM design, sponge city, smart city, and future community. In addition, it offers whole-process consulting and services for construction projects.

Applying the academic theory of “Balanced Architecture” as design guidelines, UAD has insisted on the creation of innovative, boutique projects. A large number of outstanding projects have been realized in many fields, including education and training, cultural facilities, workplace, healthcare and senior living, residential development, sports and venues, tall tower development, regeneration and restoration, landscape bridge, and rural revitalization planning. The Company has won nearly 1500 awards for outstanding design, excellent projects, or research outcomes at international, national, ministerial, and provincial levels.

UAD has always insisted on integrating design, teaching and research. Based on the resources of Zhejiang University, UAD relies on Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to provide technical guidance for prosperous architectural creations and active participations in the competition. The company has proactively carried out international academic exchanges and joint design initiatives, and delivered a number of completed projects collaboratively with well-known design firms from around the world, including but not limited to: SOM, KPF, GSP, CRTKL, HOK, JWDA, GMA, NBBJ, AUD, P+R, ARQ, HKS, and Gensler in the US, HDM (Herzog & de Meuron) in Switzerland, Kengo Kuma Architects, Nikken, Nippo Design, Kume Design, and M.A.O First-class Architects in Japan, GMP, WSP, Hein, and STI in Germany, COX, PTW, Woods Bagot in Australia, Triumph International in Canada, Palmer & Turner and DP Architects in Singapore, Powerhouse Company in the Netherlands, TFP, Benoy, Forster + Partners, and WALD in the UK.

The Engineering Technology Research Center established in 2008 is a provincial corporate technical center. In 2012, the academician expert workstation (city level) led by Academician Dong Shilin, Academician Gong Xiaonan and Academician Chen Yunmin was established. In 2014, the “Collaborative Innovation Center” was jointly established with the College of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Zhejiang University. Zhejiang Provincial Post-doctoral Workstation for Enterprises was awarded in 2016. In 2020, Zhejiang Provincial Enterprise Research Institute was awarded, and Zhejiang University Center for balance architecture was established jointly with Zhejiang University as a university-level research institute.
